Physical Therapy Q & A

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a natural approach to the treatment of illness or injury. It includes a variety of non-invasive treatments such as custom exercise, massage, heat therapy, and cold therapy. No medication or invasive treatments are ever used in physical therapy treatment at Texas Anesthesia Back Pain Center.

What happens during the first physical therapy visit?

During the first physical therapy visit, Dr. Aggarwal asks you about your medical history, and the level of pain or discomfort you might be experiencing. You are also asked about any physical limitations or lifestyle changes you may have due to illness or injury.

Dr. Aggarwal then performs a physical evaluation in which he evaluates your range of motion using a series of physical tests. Neurological tests and other specialized tests may also be done to determine the origin of the pain or movement problems. In some cases, he may also perform a posture assessment and then designs a customized physical therapy plan based on his findings.

What types of treatment are included in a physical therapy plan?

Physical therapy can include:

  • Custom strength-building exercises
  • Heat therapy
  • Cold therapy
  • Ultrasound therapy
  • Massage

Most physical therapy treatment plans consist of a blend of modalities, as this allows for faster pain relief and more effective healing. All physical therapy programs are designed to help the patient achieve the same level of health that they enjoyed before they became ill or got injured. Some physical therapy programs are combined with other treatments such as chiropractic care.

How long does the physical therapy last?

This varies among patients. Some patients need just a few visits while others need to have several months of care. The diagnosis, the severity of physical impairment, medical history, and other individual factors may all play into the length of treatment. Dr. Aggarwal evaluates patients regularly to monitor progress and can make adjustments to the physical therapy program as needed.
